How to Get Your Partner to Agree to a Couples Photo Shoot

A man and woman are on a dock with the sun and shoreline in the background. The man is hugging the woman from behind while both are smiling.

So, you’ve seen the dreamy golden-hour photos of couples I’ve worked with and now you’re thinking you’d love to do a photo shoot with your partner. But, when you bring it up to them they gripe about what they think it’ll be like and are full of all kinds of excuses not to do it. You, on the other hand, just want them to chill the heck out and take some dang pictures with ya!

Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.

Here are the top 5 excuses partners use and what you can say to get them to finally agree to creating those couples photos you’ve been dreaming of!

Excuse #1: I don’t want to get dressed up.

Fancy new clothes not required! Most people want to look like themselves, just a little more polished. Wear what’s comfortable and what you think you look good in. If you’ve got dressy casual clothes in your closet already, BOOM, you’re good to go.

Not a button up, collared shirt, or maxi dress and jewelry kinda person? That’s cool… just swap out the too-casual graphic tee and sweats for a plain v-neck and jeans or basics that at least don’t color-clash with your partner.

(P.S. To the reluctant partner: Think of the brownie points you’ll earn if you dress up a little!)

Excuse #2: Photo shoots are girly.

Will you have to do some PDA? Yeah, in front of me. Can a Couples shoot be a little bit romantic? Sure. (And actually, I’d love for you to treat it like a fun date!) Look, I’m not here to argue the masculine and feminine of it all, I just know that having professional photos that capture you together as you are now and that help tell the story of your connection is pretty freakin’ special!

Excuse #3: I feel super awkward posing.

“What do I do with my hands? Where do I look… at them or the camera? Should I be smiling?”

OMG the anxiety! Calm down…breathe… it’s gonna be ok… because I’ll give you both some simple directions that look and feel natural. That means I’ll have you doing fun things together, playing games, whispering sweet and silly nothings into each other's ears, just hanging out while I catch you in both candid and posed moments. We want those moments and smiles to be genuine!

Excuse #4: I don’t like to be in pictures.

I’m no therapist, but I know this is insecurity talking. Some people don’t like how they look in photos, or it can feel like there’s too much attention on them. Whatever the reason not to be in the pictures, I know there are far more important reasons to be in them. Not just for yourself, but for those who love you! Life goes by way too fast and there are memories to be made so get in the dang photos! I promise, it can be as casual as meeting up at a park and being in the moment with your partner while I snap pictures of you being yourselves together.

Excuse #5: Professional photos are a waste of money.

Think of it this way… they’re an investment, just like your relationship is. I can only assume that if you’re thinking about doing a Couples Session it’s because you’re really significant to each other. Maybe you’re a newer couple who can see a beautiful future together or you’ve been doing life together for a while now and want to capture the spark and love you still have going! Either way, your partnership in this time of your lives deserves to be captured in beautiful professional photography! Just think how awesome it’ll be to have these fun photos to enjoy now and for future generations to look back on!

* * * * *

Alright, I’m sure there are more excuses that can be made up if someone really, really never ever wants to do a photo shoot, but I hope this helps change someone’s mind because couples shoots are so much fun and well worth the little bit of time and effort that’s needed.

Now go chat with your reluctant partner so you can come back here and book your Couples Session! I can’t wait to get you guys outside in front of my camera to create some amazing photos!!
